Got miles to go to Palermo and return from Athens, but having trouble finding the best way to get from one to the other that isn't very expensive or very very long.
I think your best bet will be to fly from Palermo to Rome or Milan, and from there to Athens, and then a final flight to Mytilene (and later back to Athens). I'm so glad you're going to Mytilene! It's a bit of trouble to get to but worth it. We've been there several times and it's one of our favorite places. Let me know if you have any questions about the island.
Thank you Charlene,
We finally broke down and went with Alitalia to Rome and Olympic Rome to Athens to Mytilene--hoping short layovers work. We are in Lesvos, mostly near Malevos for a week--Would love to know your favorites. Would also love to know if there is a reasonable but wonderful place to stay in Mytilene when we arrive.
Kathie ... when are you going? My favorite place is Hotel Votsala, about 10 minutes north of Mytilene. They're open from May through October. Check them out on Trip Advisor. You could easily spend a couple of days at Votsala, right on the water, with clean, comfortable, inexpensive rooms, and great breakfasts. There's a little taverna just a short walk, for dinner. The hotel offers guided walks and excursions, if you're interested. Will you be renting a car? I'd recommend taking a taxi from the airport to Votsala, and then renting a car when you leave for Molyvos. You can rent it right at the hotel ... 35 euros a day, I think. (Be sure to bring your international driving permit.) Or you can take a bus from Votsala to Molyvos ... there's a bus stop just across from the hotel. We stayed at the Sea Horse Hotel right on the harbor in Molyvos and really enjoyed it. There's a great Turkish bath called Eftalou near Molyvos, too. You sit in the hot bath for a while and then run out to the sea to cool off. Lesvos is a very easy place to drive. Be sure to go to Sigri and Skala Erresos and the Gulf of Gera. Have fun!
