Best train pass

We are a family of 4 (two adults and two children - 9 yrs old) visiting Europe for first time from 7/1-7/26. Would like to know if I should consider a Swiss rail pass for stay in Interlake or another type of rail pass? We would like to avoid renting a car, if possible.

I am looking at the following itinerary:
7/1-7/7: London
7/7-7/9: Paris
7/9-7/13: Interlaken, Switzerland
7/13-7/15: Lake Como OR Cinqueterre/Vernazza???
7/15-7/17: Venice
7/17-7/18: Athens, Greece
7/18-7/25: Skopelos, Greece
7/25-7/26: Athens, Greece

Suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Don't stay in Interlaken, which is near but not in the Alps. Stay in the Alps, either in the valley (Lauterbrunnen), up one side (Wengen) or up the other side (Gimmelwald or - my preference - Mürren). Four nights in Mürren is what I did, and it worked very well. You can never predict mountain weather, and being right there allows you to change plans on the fly when the clouds come in or leave.

For passes, be aware that there are multiple options, and crunching the numbers to figure out the "best" one can be difficult. One thing that can't miss is the Half Fare Card. You get half off everything that moves in all of Switzerland, including the very expensive Jungfraujoch excursion, which is only 25% off with most other passes. The Half Fare Card costs 120 CHF, so if the total of your definite rides is 240 CHF or more, you can't lose.

However, with a Half Fare Card, you have to buy tickets every time. With a Swiss Pass or a Berner Oberland Pass, you only have to buy tickets for items not fully covered (Jungfraujoch, Schilthornbahn). For other rides that are fully covered, you just flash your pass.

I don't know the latest on children's prices, but they should travel either free or very cheaply with an add-on to the adult passes.

Your two children will travel free with you all over Switzerland as long as you request a free Swiss Family Card. Sounds too good to be true, but it's a great perk when traveling in Switzerland with kids. You definitely do not need a car as Swiss public transport is clean, efficient and on time. The "Interlaken Area" (not Interlaken) is covered with mountain railways and gondolas which are impressive feats of engineering and provide eye-popping views in the alps. The villages of Murren and Wengen are both car-free and can only be accessed via rails and gondolas. Definitely get a Swiss Pass of some kind and ask for the free Swiss Family card so that your kids ride free...even to the expensive Jungfrau.

It's easy to avoid rental cars in Switzerland! Looking at your itinerary you don't want a car in ANY of those destinations just fyi.
