We will be traveling from Portland, Oregon to Spain in late September. When is the best time to book flights? Also, the flight choices seem pretty nasty. We need to fly PDX to BCN and return from Sevilla to PDX. Is there a recommendation for a good way to go? Thanks!

try www.kayak.com and register so when the deal comes you wil be notified. you may need to fly from London via low cost airlines as easy jet or ryan air to snatch a low fare. to Spain.

Ted, Steve and JS have given you some excellent advice. It is important that you sign up for alerts to see when air prices drop. We sign up for price alerts and then wait until we see that things are changing, and then watch closely. We also sign up with Farecompare, and Orbitz. I especialy like Orbitz because I can look at a 30 day window on any route, and see if there are any days with better prices. It is really important to remain flexible about your dates to find the best prices.
When we did a similar trip from PDX to Germany/ Portugal we got an open jaw flight like you are looking at, and got much better prices than a direct flight. ( We used to love the Lufthansa flights from PDX to FRAnfurt, but those have been canceled.)
Again, like Steve suggested, once we got over the pond we used one of the lo-cost inter EU airlines for our final destination. For our Portugal/Germany trip it just happened to be Ryan Air, but we always use the site "Whichbudget.com" to check for cheap flights between inter EU cities.
We usually can't find good prices right up until 2-3 months before our trip. My wife makes me wait until the last minute to find the best deal!
