HI
Me and two friends are planning our first trip to Europe (super excited) for last weeks of may and first of june (looking at 22 may to 4 june). one of our friends lives in miami and me and the other friend we live in Puerto Rico, so is going to be hard for 3 of us to be in the same flight so with that in mind we want to try to get cheap tickes (everybody does) so when is a good time to buy tickets. We were thinking for december..what you guys think. and what is a "good deal" or an average price for that time of year. thanks for all the help that we can get.
When you figure it out, let us all know, too, OK? :)
There is no best time - deals can pop up anytime. For me, the key is signing up with some websites' newsletters for flights you are interested in, and watching the prices for awhile so you can see what they are running. Then you will be able to recognize a good deal when you see one. You have to be ready to grab it at any time, though, because bargain seats sometimes go quickly. And it's impossible to tell you what an average price is for purchases in December, partly because you don't say where you are going, and partly because the prices change all the time.
ups..forgot that important note..
leaving Puerto Rico to Madrid (madrid-barcelona-paris)..we are checking to going the other way Puerto Rico to Paris (Paris-Barcelona-Madrid) I have being checking Kayak... thanks :)
I would not just check kayak. i would check expedia, orbitz etc., as well as specific airlines' sites. you never know when the best fare will pop up. also, check codeshare flights. for example last year I went to Italy and flew Alitalia. However, they codeshare with American and by purchasing through American on the AA website, I flew the same flights for about $300 cheaper than they were selling them on Alitalia's website or any of the consolidator's. i have no idea why, but that's how it turned out. I'm starting to look at flights for next Spring to spain and i've seen the same thing so far, flights codeshare on AA are less than on Iberia, who operates the flights i'm looking at. When I went to Italy last May 2011 I bought in February. Time before that I went in October and purchased in April. Point is as others say, you never really know. When you see a deal you think is good and is well within your budget, just buy it and don't look back.
Nancy and Debra are quite correct, so please follow their advice. 1. There is no way to guarantee the lowest fare. Accept that now. Don't listen to alleged "experts" who say things like "if you book 8 weeks before your flight, you'll get the best price." You might, or you might have missed a sale two weeks before, or there may not be a sale on your route at all. 2. If you can be flexible with routes (which I think is what you were trying to say in your second post), be sure to look at prices for all possibilities. For instance, it may be cheaper to fly into Paris and out of Barcelona than the reverse. 3. Don't take a flight just because it's cheap. If it's cheaper to fly to Frankfurt than to Madrid, but you really want to go to Madrid, you're going to have to spend time and money getting from Frankfurt to Madrid - not an overall saving. But, of course, some places are not a hardship. It can be cheaper to fly into Brussels than Paris, and they're only 90 minutes apart (you still have to account for cost, though). continued..
continued.. 4. Start looking now on http://www.kayak.com/ for you possible dates and routes. That way, you will know the "standard" prices, and will be able to spot a sale. When you see a price you want, grab it right away. If you wait - for instance, to consult your travel partners - it may be gone, even just later that day. 5. Sign up for Kayak's fare alerts, as well as those of any airlines that fly your possible routes. I still get e-mails from Air Berlin from a flight I took with them in 2005. So, I was just alerted about a 3 day sale, and was able to book my tickets during the sale, that I would not otherwise have known about. 6. As Debra said, check several sites, as they can have different prices for unclear reasons. I try to book directly with the airline, but sometimes, Expedia or Orbitz have the best price. May and early June used to be "shoulder season," when airfares were not yet at their highest. Now, all bets are off, as airlines get as much money as they can. I hope you can get a good fare. But, as Nancy said, if there was a guaranteed way to do it, we'd all do it.
thanks all...great advice from all and i will make sure to follow them.. have a great weekend.
:)
