My wife and I will be driving around Germany this June. We would like to buy a spiral bound road atlas for our trip....any suggestions?
Buy it in Germany. Few years ago I bought Reiseatlas Falk there. Scale 1:200,000. Cost was 8.95 Euro. If you'd be able to find even better scale like 1:100,000 go for it.
Sean, invest in a GPS, and then buy a small Michelin fold out map of Germany. I no longer drag my 5 lb road atlas's with us on our trips. The GPS makes things much easier, and I still can revert to the country map for general planning.
The best atlas widely available in the US is probably published by Michelin. It's great for getting you from town to town, but less so navigating in cities and towns. I like the ADAC StadtAtlas series for this purpose, but they're not available in the US. Rest stations on the autobahn ("Authof") always sell all the maps and atlases you could possibly need. I personally find that a GPS often makes navigating unnecessarily complicated in Germany. The road signs in this country are so comprehensive that, with the exception of residential addresses, if you arm yourself with a little bit of knowledge of the local geography, you can find anything easier by just following the signs.
Thanks for the tips!!
Hi Sean, We used to use Michelin Maps for our trips to Germany and Austria. After many trips, we now bring none and don't see the need for GPS. As Tom mentioned, it's pretty easy getting around Germany with a little pre-planning and some knowledge. Signs are excellent. They are not posted like here in the U.S. Here you see, for instance, Rt. 80 west,. Rt. 70 east, etc. In Germany it will read E45 Salzburg, E553 Garmisch, etc. The road # and the town(s) the road is heading towards are always listed together. This applies for the secondary roads as well. Paul
