Using Auto Europe or any other sites you can choose the pick up locations. Each car rental company has several in Rome, in addition to the airport and the station. Picking up at the airport is the most expensive, followed by the train station. Renting from a location a little away from the historical center can save you quite a bit on the daily rate, often enough to pay for the taxi to take you to that location. The same is true in every city. For example in Florence, the Hertz location on via del Sansovino (not in the city center) will yield lower prices than the city center location. Take that into consideration when you search. You can find the various location of each company using Google Maps or www.PAGINEGIALLE.IT (The Italian yellow pages), just enter company name and city in the two fields.

'My credit card would have covered us'
That's new scoop. Which one?

Use kayak.com and pick the winner, AE or not. The smallest car will work fine. GPS will work. So will a map. You've got no choice on the cdw insurance, credit cards won't cover it. No deductable/less deductable is a matter of exposure willingness.

We used Hertz last trip in Italy. Check their web site for specials, not always reflected in web searches for rates. You will hopefully have posts from other people that have used a rental service, sometimes you can get a better rate on a Hertz rental from them. We went with a small car, even though I am 6'4". Parking can be an issue in the small towns. YOU NEED GPS! I packed mine and purchased an Italy card for it. Would not drive in Tuscany again without it. We took the no deductible insurance, but our trip was only 3 days. My credit card would have covered us but after reading the many posts on this site we purchased the insurance. Be careful of the restricted parking zones in the towns, it can be very costly going thru them. Again, read the posts regarding rental and the restricted zones. Good luck
