best public transportation from Gerona to Ramblas

My family will be in Barcelona from June 25 to 29. we arrive at Gerona Airport via RyanAir. Is it better renting a car or using public transportation? How is the traffic in Barcelona? is there a lot of toll road? thank you

Hopfully adynata will chime in....but I personally wouldn't drive in Barcelona. Traffic is very bad, and there's no parking anywhere. A friend of mine who was there as recently as last month says he'll never do it again....although admittedly, he's never tried driving in Rome ;). From Girona airport, there are coach buses that are timed with Ryanair flight arrivals (and departures on the way out). It is run by a separate company, Sagales, and takes about 75 minutes to make the run to Barcelona's main bus station, which is close to the Arc de Triomf metro station, 2 stops north of Placa Catalunya. Cost is about 13 Euro, but you can buy a round-trip ticket for about 22 Euro. You can find schedules at http://tinyurl.com/534el5 . Be aware that Sagales will not guarantee your connection. So if the truckers are still protesting, and you're flying back out of Girona, you may want to catch an earlier bus than you normally would.

thank you Norm for the reply. How about rent a car to transport from Gerona to Ramblas, and drop off there. When I am going back to the airport again on the 29, rent the car the same day and drop off at the airport. I don't want to take the risk since they have the strike over there.

You can try that if you want, but it would probably be very expensive just to rent for a day. If the strike holds up buses, it'll hold you up in the car just as easily. Depending on when you leave on the 29th, you may have to pick up your car the day before, and that'll mean you'll have to find parking for that night.

Kim, if you're concerned, you may want to plan to go to Girona the night before and stay there....then you'll only have to make it to the airport from the town.

thank you Norm. Your thought is also my thought. I will go back to Gerona the night before (the 28th), since I have to fly back on the early morning flight. Thanks again for all your help.

They have trains in Spain. Some go from Girona to big famous areas for cheap.

Hi Norm,

I checked the Sagales website. From Girona to Ramblas, I couldn't find the name Ramblas on their map. What should I checked for destination name? Where is the nearby route to stop on Ramblas? Thanks

Nope....the bus takes you to the bus station, which is near the Arc de Triomf metro stop. The Ramblas starts at Placa Cataluyna....which is two stops west of the Arc stop (on the red line)....and runs south from there. If you want to take the metro under the Ramblas, you'll have to switch to the green line at Catalunya. There's a stop at Liceu, about halfway down, and another at Drassanes, which is at the foot of the Ramblas, near the Christopher Columbus monument, the waterfront, and the new waterfront shopping mall. See the metro map at http://www.tmb.net/en_US/barcelona/moute/planols/planoxarxametro.jsp . If you go to maps.google.com and paste in these coordinates (41.393524, 2.182235) and switch on satellite view, you'll see the bus station. The metro stop is two blocks to your lower left, along Avenguda de Vilanova.
