Please help me find best public transport from London/ Chelsea area to Towcester/Northampton. Can use variety of train, bus, cab but am on a budget. Will be going to Easton Neston historic day visit- week of June 2-5. Can stay overnight if needed- recommendations great appreciated- thanks all!
Train from London Euston to Northampton - it isn't a long-distance service so I suspect that you won't get much of a discount by booking in advance. See www.nationalrail.co.uk for info.
Then bus route 89 from Northampton to Towcester - timetable at http://www.stagecoachbus.com/GetUpload.ashx?Id=1509
Dear Philip- Thanks so much for your help. Guess I'll do that then cab to location from bus station. Do you think it would be best to stay overnight and if so any suggestions in Towcester? Also- can I take a coach directly from London to Towcester?
I suspect Towcester is too small for a direct coach, and if it isn't there will probably be only one or two journeys from London to Towcester during the evening peak.

Getting to Northampton from London Euston Station. London Midland runs a fantastic service of very modern, air-conditioned, comfortable, frequent electric trains between the two places.
I have just checked on
and found many £6 each way tickets on the 2nd of June.
Despite the posts of another poster, I can assure you that the cheapest tickets go rapidly and should be booked ASAP. They are for single tickets and that can be cheaper than return tickets. Check carefully on the >Find Cheap Fares< page.
The service is straight through, with no changes in as little as 54 minutes.
Only London Midland serves Northampton, except just a very few Virgin Trains each week.
At Euston you need to look for trains to Birmingham via Northampton, to Crewe via Northampton, or trains to Northampton. There are both stopping (slower)
trains and fast trains only stopping 3 or 4 times. The ones to Crewe tend to be the fastest ones.
If you prebuy the cheapest tickets you must travel on the train you have reserved. You can't change travel arrangements on the cheapest tickets.
Even the turn up and go tickets are not bad.
I agree to take the bus or taxi to Towcester. I don't know if there is a race meeting at Towcester but if the horses are in town it will be plenty busy.
FWIW - Towcester is pronounced toaster, like what you put bread in and heat up.
I have plenty of specialist knowledge about the trains on that line if I can answer any further questions.
Thank you Philip and Nigel- I did exactly as you suggested and via phone got the GBP 6 price for the train in advance. The problem with London Midland online is that the system doesn't regognize non UK addresses so I couldn't add the Plus Bus rate - only 2-3 GBP same as at the station.
Last spring race in Towcester is 5/31, so it will be quiet when you are there. If you need a hotel, try the Saracens Head in Towcester or the Ibis hotel in Northampton(cheap & near the station).
Hi Time- Thank you- I have already booked the Saracens Head-looks good!
