If you're having trouble finding information on the net, you may want to speak with a travel agent. H/she will be able to help sort out all the choices.

Don't travel agents take a cut?

I'm pretty handy looking stuff up online!

I stayed at the Outrigger. It's a fabulous place. Lots of shops, restaurants around and very close to the International Market Place for some fun trinkets. Their breakfast is amazing, outside with the ocean as your view. Great outdoor pool and hot tub. We used the shuttle that took us to Pearl Harbor. We had multiple pick up times so you can stay there and take your time. There were other tour options too. You can probably find a home rental for cheaper but the Outrigger is fabulous if the price is ok for you.

"Best Hotels". Depends on how you define "best". For some "best" means luxurious with all the ammenities. For others, "best" means cheapest. If location maters, "best" depends on close to what, such as your "2 steps to the ocean". Our "best location" preference is at the outskirts of Waikiki for an easier drive to visit friends and family.

We liked the Ilikai Hotel because it is at the Ewa end of Waikiki closer to town and near the Ala Moana Park (good for a morning jog) but it's more than 2 steps to the ocean. Ilikiai units are condo like suites with small kitchen with full size appliances setup. http://www.ilikaihotel.com/

For economy (i.e. cheaper) we like the somewhat dated but clean and cheaper Queen Kapiolani on the Diamond Head side of Waikiki (next to the Zoo and Kapiolani Park). But its 0.1 miles to Kuhio Beach. http://www.queenkapiolani.com/

You can use Goggle Maps and look for hotels near Waikiki Beach HI to find the physically closest to sand.

Hawaiian Airlines works for me. Usually the most affordable option, they feed you free, and they have the best on time rating.

I stay at the Marriott mostly. Nice place, not outrageously expensive, but not cheep. Just across the street from the beach at the Diamond Head end of Waikiki.

Book both directly with the operator. Third party sites will not save you much of anything. Also, Hawaiian Air usually has deals with many of the Waikiki hotels where the package will cost the same or less than just airfare.
