Without doing a lot of checking, I would first look to an advance purchase ticket on the Eurostar from London to Brussels and the train to Amsterdam frm there. Advance purchase tickets can be very cheap and you have the advance time.

Easy Jet from London to Amsterdam, fares run from 27 to 41 GBP per seat depending on date and airport flying from. Price will increase as you get further along. Scheduled flight time 75 minutes. presumably you've already arranged open jaw for your main flights, if not, then you could also check on a 3 city flight CA-> London, London -> Amsterdam, Amsterdam -> Home all on same ticket, but that will likely cost more than taking EasyJet.

Suzanne, If you wanted to look at the train options, go to Eurostar.com for the London to Brussels leg of the trip. Depending on the day you're leaving London, there are fares as low as $66 and it takes about 2.5 hours. From there, you'd catch the train to Amsterdam, with fares as low as €36 ($48) and takes another 2 hours and 45 minutes. To look at schedules and fares for the Brussels to Amsterdam leg look at http://www.b-europe.com/Travel. You can research the above sites as well as Ryan Air and see which will work best for you. Have a great trip!

Here are more details about the non-flying options, from The Man In Seat 61: http://seat61.com/Netherlands.htm#.Uhzcij_Bzew You can fly if you wish (look for flights on http://www.skyscanner.com), but once you factor in getting to and from the airports (especially on the London end) I don't think you'll save any time over the Eurostar/Thalys combo. That's the way I'd do it, following the directions on the Seat 61 website. Do be sure to book this in advance; last minute tickets will cost a fortune.

Suzanne, If you have a "budget" say so. that way others will know what your limit is and also if its possible for you to meet that "budget" I booked a one way flight on Easyjet for the end of sept 2013 on a weekday. It cost me 71 USD and im leaving from Gatwich (LGW) to Schiphol (AMS). I booked it several months ago. im sure there are less expensive flights, but thats what i needed. happy trails.

"Best" usually doesn't go well along with "cheap". The lowest prices you can find on Eurostar are € 59, but you need to buy them with most possible advance. You might try low-cost airlines as well.

Another "cheap" way if budget is your biggest concern is the traditional daytime or overnight rail-ferry route via Harwich and Vlissengen (Flushing), now marketed at "Dutch Flyer". It can be cheaper than rail or flight, but it takes a long time and the outward daytime option requires a very early departure from central London.
