We are planning our 1st trip to Italy, we are planning on starting out in Venice and ending in Rome. Each city has more than one airport, which airports are best for getting right to Venice and Rome? Would appreciate some advice. thanks
Venice Marco Polo Airport (Code VCE) and Rome Leonardo da Vinci Airport (Code FCO) are the big international airports.
Rome is the big intl airport, but it is crowded and has long lines. Last fall we ended our stay in Perugia which has a small airport. I used Orbitz and ended up with a ticket from Perugia to Milan on Alitalia, then the US carrier from Milan back home.
This is just an example, but it can be more convenient to end up in a smaller city without the big crowds checking in for flights and fly within Europe to the larger city to connect to the int'l flight back home. The heart of Rome is some distance from the airport, and staying near the airport is expensive and completely lacks the charm of being in Rome.
