Not sure of the logistics but Singapore airlines is great, excellent airline. Out of Australia you always travel via SE Asia and use on the the asian airlines or Qantas. Singapore would be my airline of choice although I tend to go with Cathay Pacific as it flies directly into Rome.

Try Air One. They fly Frankfurt to Venice as a Lufthansa partner. Check both websites for the best price, but either way you'll probably fly on Air One. I've flown them multiple times within Italy and have always been very pleased. Be sure to allow extra time between flights, as you'll need to check in both times you pass through Frankfurt (if you buy separate Frankfurt-Venice tickets).

Agree with Frank use Air One to get to Venice. I have found it far better than Alitalia in terms of leaving on time etc. No problems at all.

You might want to read postings on this site about 12-15 threads down regarding Alitalia and lost luggage. It appears that they are not trustworthy is this department. Customer service reportedly is not good.

US Airways flies direct from Phili to Rome and Venice. The planes are nothing special, but it was easy and they didn't lose any luggage.

I, too, would recommend flying as direct as possible. I don't like to waste time in airports. Have had good experiences with Delta's direct flights from Cincinnati and JFK to Rome. They now have a JFK--Tuscany (Pisa) flight, too. Also, they fly direct back to JFK from Venice. Have done that a couple times.
