Traveling by train out of Barcelona to Arles. Want to rent a car maybe in Narbonne and drive Provence region for 4-5 days and drop off near Nice and take train to Italian Riviera. Narbanne as an overnight might allow a side trip to Carcasonne or just enjoy the drive through Nimes then Arles. Any recommendations on renting? Are the prices any differenct if I book a car while I am en route?
The time of booking shouldn't matter, but prebooking is cheaper than walk-up. Another idea might be to pick up the car in Perpignan and spend the night there - - it's a lot more interesting than Narbonne. The next day you could hit Carcassonne and Aigues Mortes (it's neat and keeps the theme going). You only need a couple of hours in each. The total driving time to Nimes, which would be your logical first stop in Provence, is only about three hours. (Arles is only about fiftee minutes more.)If you need something else enroute to fill the day, stop at Sete for a while. The other plus to Perpignan is that there are any number of places with a variety of really great grub due to the diversity of it's background.
