Bernina Express Switzerland

Out of curiosity, has anyone been on the Bernina Express from Chur to Lake Lugano? Would love to hear your thoughts

Yes, in May 2006. We took the Bernina Express just for the tripthe train, the scenery, and the rail line. The looping viaducts and many tunnels are amazing. The bus portion of the trip was wild and crazythe driver drove so close to the mountain side the vines were brushing against the vehicle. And there were also many beautiful scenes driving along the lakes into Lugano. The previous day we had taken the Glacier Express. Again, just for the trip!
Have a great trip.

Thanks for this info. Gotta love those Italian drivers!!!
I've ridden the Amalfi Coast road on a SITA bus, so I will be well prepared.

Judy, Yes, I took the trip from Lugano to Chur on the Bernina Express last June. As you mentioned, the first part of the trip from Lugano to Tirano is via Bus, which was an "interesting experience", especially when encountering rather large Caravans on narrow Italian roads. Those Drivers are amazing! The Bus stops in a small town in Italy for a brief "rest & coffee stop" during the trip. The rail trip from Tirano to Chur passed through some of the most incredible and beautiful scenery. Travelling on streets through some of the towns at the beginning was very unique. Unfortunately, the weather was somewhat overcast and rainy for part of the journey, but I enjoyed it anyway. The railway is a UNESCO World Heritage site due to the incredible engineering. Although it doesn't seem to get "rave reviews" as a destination in the Guidebooks, I decided to stay in Chur for a few nights to have a look around (before heading to Appenzell), and quite enjoyed it. Happy travels!
