We are staying in Ossuccio 15 to 22nd August and would like to do the Bernina Express (or similar train journey) and would like to know the simpliest way of doing this? We would rather plan it ourselves rather than an organised excursion (the excursions use 2nd class tickets on the train ... what is the difference?) Hoping you can help

You can make your way to Varenna on the lake across from Menaggio ( a short ferry ride connects them). Take the train from Varenna to Tirano where you can pick up the Bernina Express. The "official" Bernina Express departs Tirano around 14:00, but there are regional trains on the same route at other times. Use the Swiss rail site www.rail.ch to see schedules, and the Bernina Express site to learn about the train itself and make reservations if you wish. Www.rhb.ch
