bernina express

We will have a Swiss pass take the Bernina Express to go from Pontresina to Tirano. We plan to then go back to Pontresina the same day. do we need to purchase an additional ticket to return or will the Swiss Pass cover this? Has anyone just used the regional train over the same route? Thank you Annelle

You Swiss Pass will cover your return on the regional train. The regional trains run on the same tracks. The only difference is that the Bernina Express (and also the Glacier Express) have nicer carriages and bigger windows. There may be a supplemental fee on the Bernina Express that you won't pay on the regional. Perhaps they make fewer stops as well. But, the regional trains work just fine and they run more frequently. We've done this on the Glacier Express. We rode the GE from Brig to Disentis and then returned on the regional. We had an extra train change but it was great both ways.
