Berner Oberland regional pass with a Swiss Pass

If you follow Rick's links and arrive at this page, http://www.regiopass-berneroberland.ch/engl/preis.html, you find that the regional pass is cheaper if you have a Swiss Pass. But why would you want to get the regional pass if you already have the Swiss Pass that covers all the same transportation, and more? What am I missing?

Maybe you wouldn't want to. But the Berner Oberland pass does cover a few routes that the Swiss Pass doesn't cover (or only covers with a discount), such as the tram to Murren and the rail line between Wengen and Grindelwald.

It definitely makes more sense to use the discounted BO Pass with a Swiss Transfer ticket, for example, or duing "off" days of a Swiss Flexi Pass (although I haven't run the numbers for that).

Maybe it would be even more strange and inconsistent for BLS not to offer any discount on the Pass to Swiss Pass holders, if they're going to offer a discount to holders of less extensive passes.

Peter: The Swiss Pass definitely DOES cover the trip all the way up to Muerren at 100%. Do you mean the Gondola when you say tram?

Thanks, I had missed the few lines that differ between the two passes. We are planning to go to Gimmelwald and then to Murren which is covered with either pass, I believe.

But your idea of using the Swiss Flexi plus the B.O. regional could be just the combination that would work best for us. I'll have to run the numbers for our particular trips.

Thanks again,
Paul

Tim and Peter, you are probably both aware (I heard it from Rick) that the old Funicular from Lauterbrunnen to Gruetschalp has been replaced by a Cable Car. The little train (tram?) from Gruetschalp to Muerren is still there, I think, but I don't know if it is or is not covered by the Swiss passes. But we'll go up via the cable car to Gimmelwald in any case.

Thanks,
Paul

Yes, Paul. I rode the new gondola from Lauterbrunnen to Grutschalp last year as well as the train onwards to Muerren. I also enjoy the Gondola from Stechelberg to Gimmelwald to Muerren. All of these are covered 100% by the Swiss Pass.

Muerren is one of my favorite places in the world, and even though I've been there at least 5 times I've already got my plane tickets and reservations for Chalet Fontana for June 2010!!!
