Hello. My family is traveling to Switzerland in July and we are trying to decide if we can stay in Bern the night before our flight returning home. We fly out of Zurich at 1:15 in the afternoon and don't know if taking a morning train to the airport is a good idea. Maybe we should take a late train the night before and stay near the airport? Not moving would gives us two nights in Bern. Thoughts?

With a direct train every 30 minutes for a 1 hour 15 minute trip, why not take a morning train. Everyone else in Switzerland does it.

Look up train times and prices on www.sbb.ch
The first train in the morning departs Bern 04:21, arrives Zürich Flughafen 05:32. Is that early enough for you? :-)
Thereafter two direct trains per hour for thr rest of the day. No problem.

I would take the morning train. On two occasions, I've had an afternoon flight out of Frankfurt(M) airport and come in from an hour or two out, once 2 hours from a town in the Black Forest and once 1¼ hr from Boppard on the Rhein.
I would, however, allow a little extra time, say 3 hours or more, as a contingency. There is a 9:02 train getting to ZRH at 10:16. That gives you 3 hours. Or there is one at 8:32, getting to the airport at 9:42, if you want a little more buffer. You might skip breakfast and leave earlier; if you get to ZRH on time, you'll have plenty of time for breakfast there.
