Berlin to Gielow, Germany

I wish to visit the hometown of my grandfather. At first I thought I could accomplish this while on a cruise to Warnemunde, but it seems it would take too long. I am now thinking about going to Berlin prior to the cruise so I can see Berlin more leisurely and also try getting to Gielow via bus or train. Suggestions on train/bus to Gielow. My husband doesn't wish to drive.

The closest train station that I can see looking at the map is Malchin and from there it is 4 miles to the town (presuming that you mean this one: http://goo.gl/maps/iivZ5 ). There is a train that goes to Malchin via Pasewalk from Berlin that takes about 3.5 hours. Check bahn.com for your exact departure dates and schedule.

You can find schedules on the German Rail (Bahn) website. It doesn't look like Gielow actually has a train station. There are several bus stops in town, one at the Memorial (Denkmal). It also doesn't look like there is a real direct connection. Most routes take up to 4 hours and have several connections. It looks like the buses to/from Gielow run mostly around rush hour.

I remember your question from a couple of weeks ago. Since it seems pretty difficult finding out how to get to Gielow I did some research and called a few local offices. First of all Gielow is part of the town of Malchin (administration-wise). Malchin also is the closest train station and is on the Lübeck to Stettin (Szczecin) route. As it has been mentioned to you above you can find all the information as to how to get to Malchin on Bahn.de. From Malchin train station there is a bus service provided by local DVG. The bus lines 403, 406 and 409 connect Malchin station with Gielow. One-way fare is €1.70 (to be paid to the driver). The bus stop at Malchin train station is referred to as Malchin ZOB. As Gielow is a pretty wide-spread village and as there are three stops within that village you might want to ask the bus driver which one would be the central one, but from the sounds of it it could be "Gielow Denkmal" (memorial). Also please note that this bus line continues to Waren which is a beautiful lake-side resort.

Thanks for all the info. I also got a reply from a limo service which was more expensive of course. Andreas, besides Waren and the lake are there any other side trips via bus or train I could take of beauty or interest while I'm in the area considering I will have from ~0830 until 1700 when I should be back to the ship. As far as Berlin goes, we'll come a few days before ship's departure to see it. Thanks again to all of you.
