Berlin's old airport SXF is closing

After closing airports THF and TXL now SXF is closing finally by ending operations in Terminal 5. For decades SXF was the international airport of former GDR. Short goodbye video from local public TV in German language - I do not know if geo fencing is active or if everybody can watch it.

In the future BER is serving as only international airport for Brandenburg and Berlin.

Cool video Mark - Louis Armstrong! Fidel Castro! I flew through TXL on my last visit but look forward to experiencing BER some day.

As a Cold War child of West-Berlin TXL was my homebase.

My uncle worked as meteorologist at THF in the 70s. After his death Berlin Technology Museum was interested in his private pictures from working at that airport and in picture albums from other airports such as the old FRA behind the scenes. I still have original old punched cards from German weather service DWD that he used.

I'm a huge fan of "in-city" airports and will miss TXL dearly as I have also "mourned" the loss of Air Berlin. As someone who has now spent > 150 nights in Berlin - Air Berlin was the ticket to get to my favourite city from literally anywhere in Europe.
