Bergen to London, Best of Scandinavia

We're on the tour starting in Stockholm and ending in Bergen on 9/14. What transportation options are best to get to London Heathrow from Bergen at the end of the tour?

Rather than a multi city airline ticket into Stockholm and out of Bergen, it's much cheaper for us to fly round trip via London Heathrow. I'm aware there is a flight from Bergen to London Gatwick but is this the best option, which of course requires a bus ride to Heathrow? Thanks for your input.

I've taken the BGO to LGW flight. The only other way from Bergen to Heathrow would be to change planes in either Oslo or Copenhagen.

First, there are flights from Bergen (BGO) to London Heathrow (LHR). While not great given a stop along the route, it's in the range of $150 per person one-way (see KLM). Me? Absent missing factors, I'd first search for an open-jaw ticket into Stockholm (ARN) and out of Bergen. If you examine flight services at the Bergen airport, you'll notice a number of airlines that might work for you. Icelandair is one example. Where in the world do you live? You'll have to do the research to compare costs, time and the nuisance factor.

Good input. Thanks...I’m coming from Pittsburgh PA. British Airways just started direct flights to LHR which I was hoping to use for this trip. I’ll keep researching !

When I did this tour in June, I flew RT from Seattle to Amsterdam on Delta. I spent a couple of nights there, then flew multi-city Amsterdam to Stockholm and Bergen to Amsterdam on KLM. I arrived 2 days early in Stockholm and stayed one day later in Bergen, using the tour hotels. I also stayed 2 extra nights in Amsterdam at the beginning and end of the trip.

Having all that flexibility opened up many more flight options than I would've had if I needed to get to Stockholm in one trip and back home in one trip. It was also cheaper for airfare, but not overall because of the extra lodging and food costs.

In my case, the extra time in Stockholm and Bergen was to see and do things not on the tour. The Amsterdam time was for jet lag recovery and for things I hadn't seen or done there before.

If something similar would work for you, I highly recommend it. For me, arriving at least day early to Europe or the starting city gets me over jet lag by the time of the first group gathering, making my comprehension of the presentation much better. And leaving for home the morning the tour ends is stressful, especially if my only flight option is very early in the morning.

By the way, I took a bus from the Stockholm airport into town and then a taxi to the tour hotel. That was a little complicated. It's an easy bus ride from Bergen to the airport there.

1) If you are going to buy a separate ticket from Bergen to London, I would not do this on the same day as your flight back to the U.S. I’d suggest adding at least an overnight in London. If you miss your transatlantic flight, the airline could require you to buy a new ticket. This could be very expensive.

2) Have you tried other multi-city permutations? I would look at cost of flying from your Home airport to ARN (Stockholm Arlanda) and then home from London. There are lots of daily flights between London and Stockholm. Bergen is the outlier and that may be what is causing the higher price on the multi-city arrangement.

You can take a direct flight to London Gatwick cheap on Norwegian Air Shuttle. Then it's a 1 hour bus ride between the airports.
If you're spending the night, you can take a train into London and take the 15 minute Heathrow Express from the Paddington train station the next morning.

You'd think that they'd have more than one direct flight out of Bergen to London. Seems funny.

Heathrow slots are expensive so airlines might not find Bergen-Heathrow profitable enough. But SAS via Stavanger is a pretty smooth way to get to Heathrow (KLM can be expensive one way).

Thanks everyone. Great input! I’m really looking forward to this trip. We’re on a wait list to stay at the tour hotel for 2 pre-tour nights in Stockholm. Glad I started planning far in advance. 😀
