Bergamo to Zurich

What's the best way to get from the Bergamo airport to Zurich? I will be landing in Bergamo from Volos, Greece on August 5 at 20:05. Is it possible to get to Zurich by midnight, or should I plan to spend a night in Bergamo? And if in Bergamo, where?

It is not possible to get to Zürich by midnight. It is a journey of nearly 5 hours by the shortest route (via Milan). Use the schedules at www.rail.ch (the Swiss train website ) or Trenitalia to see the schedules.

Bergamo is supposed to be a lovely place---I'd just stay there.

You want to go to Zürich, but you are flying to Bergamo? Why? Oh, you are flying RyanAir, and Ryan doesn't fly to anywhere people want to go to. Pity.

There are a few trains that go from Milan to Zürich in just under 4 hours, but that's Milan. It takes about an hour to get from Bergamo airport to Milan.

No, you can't do it.

Too bad you didn't book RyanAir to Friedrichshafen, Germany. It's closer to Zürich than Bergamo. Oh, Ryan doesn't fly from Volos to Friedrichshafen, either. There are so many advantages to flying RyanAir.

Lee---no need for your sarcasm. Thea apparently already has her ticket and just needs to know how to get to Zürich.

Thea---hopefully someone else will see your question and suggest a place to stay in Bergamo. We haven't been there, but I was considering adding it to our next trip. Unfortunately I couldn't make it fit, but I remember I found a nice little place to stay. If I remember it I'll post again.

I don't know how to make it turn blue, but here's a link to a trip report on SlowTrav:

There are also several Bergamo trip reports on Fodors. apparently there are shuttles to the train station from the airport. I assume the train station is in the "lower city". You have to take a funicular (or climb a steelp hill on foot) to get to the upper town.

I'm flying into Bergamo because I have a direct flight from there to Volos, Greece, to avoid flying in and out of Athens. And I will be flying out of Zurich because I will be visiting friends there on the way home to SFO. I prefer the Bernina Express through St. Moritz, since the usual route is mostly tunnels and the narrow gauge railroad is such a great scenic route to Zurich. I think it will be no problem leaving the next morning. Has anyone ever taken the train from Bergamo to Locarno or Lake Como, where I can catch the Bernina Express?

The Bernina Express actually goes to Lugano, not Locarno. but the secton between Lugano and Tirano is by bus. You might do better to just pick up the scenic train portion in Tirano.

But she is starting in Bergamo---there is no need to go to either Milan (out of the way) or Lugano (bus ride).

From Bergamo she can go straight to Tirano via Lecco, and along (or above) the lake.

Including the bus ride portion between Lugano and Tirano, plus train from Bergamo to Lugano, would make for a very long day.

Thanks for the correction---I knew that but typed it wrong. Hopefully it's clear now.

I'll overnight at Angolo del Poeta in Bergamo, take the train from Bergamo to Lecco, Lecco to Tirano, Tirano to Zurich ... via the Bernina Express, St. Mortiz and Chur ... leaving Bergamo at 10 am, arriving Zurich at 9 pm. A lovely ride! Thanks for your help, folks. Thea

Which is better ... the bus from Bergamo to Milan or the train (I'll be in Bergamo and the b&b can deliver me to either the bus or train station). Any ideas about that?
