My wife and I will be in Berchtesgaden, Germany on May 12,2010 until 1700. We need to continue our travel to Venice the same day which means that we need to travel at night. What's the best route to take? One more question:
Can we use the Bayern-ticket from Munich to Salzburg? Appreciate the help. Thanks.
Can we use the Bayern-ticket from Munich to Salzburg?
Yes. Although Salzburg Hbf is in Austria, it is right across the river from Germany, and German Rail runs the trains the few km into the station. Salzburg Hbf is considered a border station and the Bayern-Ticket is valid that far, although not for other transport in Salzburg. The Bayern-Ticket is always available from an automat at the station for €28 as well as from a counter for €30.
As for the night train, you can take trains from Berchtesgaden to Rosenheim with a change at Freilassing and catch the German Night train, CNL 363 from Munich. It leaves Rosenheim at 21:43. That train arrives in Venice at 6:38. That is a popular train and it looks like all of the discounted fares are sold out (You're lucky to find any space available this late. Book soon.)
There is also a connection through Salzburg on EN 237 (Vienna to Salzburg) leaving Salzburg at 1:34 and arriving in Venice at 8:34. Again, discounted tickets are sold out. You can book this train at the Austrian Rail website, www.oebb.at.
Finally, there is a connection from Salzburg via Villach (22:45) by regular train, meeting EN 1239 in Villach at 00:45. You only ride the night train for less than 3 hrs, arriving Venice Mestre at 3:32. From there you can walk to the island or wait until 4:48 for a bus to Santa Lucia.
Thanks Lee! I wouldn't have thought of those routes had you not mentioned them. I was really hoping that you would see the posting. Again, thanks a bunch.
