I read that the IC local trains have only over head storage for smaller luggage items and no special storage areas in the cars for larger luggage. I'm trying to find out where one can keep a larger suitcase on the train.

kGerry, More after the personal note. I'm pretty sure larger suitcases will not fit in the overhead. Of course, "larger" is a little bit vague, but then I am amazed at what some people try to stuff in the overhead. If you have something the size of Steves wheelie it will go.

How big is your "larger" suitcase? We use convertible carry-ons and they have always fit in the overhead. I've noticed some people with large wheelies keep them at the end of the car.

I haven't carried luggage on an NMBS train for a few years, so take my imperfect memory at face value. But I don't recall any real difficulty fitting a standard-sized suitcase on the overhead rack.

The stock that NMBS runs on their Intercity runs varies from old to modern, so the answer will vary. Generally there are spaces between seat backs which accomodate suitcases, and others will keep them near the doors (watch them at stations) and still others will try to put them on seats - not advised.
