Base for the Black Forest: Triberg or Freiburg?

I will be in the Black Forest area from Sep 25th through the 28th. I will be coming from either Fussen, Augsburg or Basel, Switzerland, not sure yet. But I was wondering if I should stay in Triberg or Friedburg as a base for my three days in the black Forest. I know two of those days will include Friedburg and Basel. Any recommendations or advice?

Triberg is pretty far from Freiburg and Basel for daytrips. Stay somewhere in between Triberg and Freiburg. GENGENBACH (near Offenburg) is ideal in several ways. It's a gorgeous old walled town - rare in this area. It's 1 hour from Freiburg, about 35 minutes from Triberg along the scenic BLACK FOREST RAILWAY. And staying there gets you the KONUS KARTE, a guest pass issued by all innkeepers that provides you with discounts to attractions like the Black Forest museum in Triberg AND FREE RAIL/BUS TRAVEL throughout your stay. How can you beat free daytrips to Triberg, Freiburg and Basel? It's 2 hours + to Basel from Gengenbach, but if you can arrange to see Basel prior to the BF, long-trip-problem solved. freiburg and Triberg COULD be used as base towns. But... Freiburg doesn't offer the Konus Karte. Triberg does but its location and the location of the train station (down a steep incline, well outside the town itself) make coming and going to the other places problematic.

I'm also on foot, relying on train or bus.

We stayed in Freiburg in 2010 and our hotel issued us with a transport card.

Judy: Did you receive a "Welcomekarte" from your hosts in Freiburg? A "Welcomekarte" permits travel for 3 days in the immediate Freiburg area, but normally, it's not issued routinely for free and must be paid for. The Konuskarte, which permits travel in a much wider area, isn't issued in Freiburg - only in smaller participating towns, like these that begin with "F": http://www.schwarzwald-tourismus.info/Service/konus/%28az%29/F

Just for a bit of further clarification - The Konus Card - Konus Carte - isn't exclusively a transportation card. It includes free or discounted admission to many Schwarzwald attractions, municipal pools, and local ameneties. It is issued for free in a huge number of smaller towns and villages within the coverage area but NOT in the bigger citoes and towns, and certainly not Freiberg im Breisgau. It does include unlimited local bus and regional train travel within the area, and even to Basel Bad Bahnhof and extends to Basel SBB Hbf. It is paid for with the Kurtax.

Is Basel worth a visit? Yes, yes, yes, most certainly yes. One of my favourite cities in Switzerland and central Europe.
