barcelono-provence-cote d'azur-cinque terre-milan

Hi:

Family of 5 planning trip:
- fly into Barcelona and stay several days
- take train to provence (probably Aix-en-Provence would be base)
- rent car and drive around provence for a week
- stay somewhere in Cote d'Azur (near Nice) for 2-3 days; then return rental car
- take train to Cinque Terre where stay 2-4 days
- take train to Milan, stay a few nites and then fly home

As you can see, schedule somewhat complex. I don't think I'm too bright--can't really figure out trains. How difficult would it be to catch train from Nice, France to Cinque Terre, Italy? Does anyone have any recommendations for modes of transportation, routes, etc for any part of our trip?

Many thanks.

I might be able to help a little. I just returned home and traveled the reverse from Nice to Provence (stayed in Arles) then to Girona and Barcelona. We took trains for each leg which I found to be very efficient and I felt that booking was relatively easy. I would recommend the trains for each of your legs, because the scenery is quite beautiful. Keep in mind that some of these train routes could take a while, namely Barcelona to Provence. Check out the TGV site (tgv.com) or Deutsche Bahn (bahn.de) for schedules.
