Does any one know the best way to get from Barcelona to Le Puy in Velay France, It looks like the train goes out of the way to Lyon first but I have seen other small train services that go from Nimes direclty to Le Puy en Velay that don't show up on the Bahn site. Is it easier to drive from one country to another or best to take the train?

The DB site shows the fastest route between the two stations you request, not necessarily the shortest distance. The route from Nimes to Le Puy en Velay (no actual direct trains according to my European Rail Timetable) uses very minor lines with infrequent, slow services, and probably a very long (as in several hours) wait for a connection.
I would take the route recommended by DB via Lyon. I understand that driving internationally with a hire car can lead to punitively high drop-off fees, so you if you want to explore by car you might want to take the train to somewhere in southern France and hire a car there.
