Barcelona local transportation options.

We'll be in Barcelona in Sept for 2.5 days/ 2 nights. Arriving by plane from the US and departing to Madrid. Is it better to get the Barcelona Card for two days (€27,5) , the local Hop-on-Hop-off 2 day (€30) or other options to see the sites, get around, get to and from the airport, etc? We're staying near Plaza Catalunya.

I'm cheap and travel solo, so when I was in Barcelona in June 2009 (arriving by train from Collioure) for 1.5 days/2 nights, I walked a lot, bought an all-day transit pass (5.90 euros now), and took the Aerobus from Placa de Catalunya to the airport (now 5.05 euros). My recommendation: decide what sightseeing you plan to do before plunking down the 30 euros. My favorite things to see in Barcelona were free of admission (Parc Guell, Barcoleneta, Boqueria, Gaudi exteriors, Olympic Stadium, Cathedral, RS self-guided walks).

Thanks for the information. This sounds like a good thing to factor in.

Instead of the Barcelona Card, you might also consider the Articket - lets you skip the lines at 7 different museums (including Picasso and Casa Mila) which was worth it to me. You can buy online and pick up at the tourist office at the airport. I didn't bother with a metro pass, did lots of walking and took the metro as needed. the Aerobus is your best and cheapest option from airport to Catalunya, drops you right in front of El Corte Ingles (department store on the Placa Catalunya). You can buy round trip tickets to save $. Just keep your wits about you when you get off the bus, the pickpockets line up to take advantage of freshly jet lagged people.
