Barcelona and Paris

Hi, I'm planning to trip to visit Barcelona and Paris in June. What is the best way to travel from one city to the other? I'll probably fly open-jaw. It looks like the only trains are overnight and cost a lot, while flying seems really cheap (any hidden fees?) Is there any good reasons to choose train over air (or vice versa?) If I take the train, is there any place in between that's worth visiting for a couple of days? Thanks!

I also posted on the "To the west" board.

I am currently planning a trip flying into Madrid and out of Paris. I first thought we could do an overnight train from Madrid to Paris, but then our plans changed and we are spending some time in southern France before heading to Paris. Southern France seemed like a natural place to spend a few days between Madrid and Paris. I was shocked when I started checking on train tickets. Eight hours or more just to get from Madrid to the French border to pick up a rental car! I think we are going to fly EasyJet from Madrid to Toulouse, spend the night in Toulouse, then a night in Laguiole, then down to Nimes for a few days. Then to Paris.
