Advice needed for Baltic cruise ports, particularly the Warnemuende/Berlin. Is there any easy, less expensive way other than a shore excursion fromthe ship to get into Berlin? Also, in Amsterdam, is the train the best option back to the airport after cruise? I believe the station is very near the port and we don't want to waste any euros if we can walk! Thank you.
Hi, The most direct and simpliest way from Warnemünde to Berlin Hbf is to go via Rostock. Take the S-Bahn from Warnemünde to Rostock Hbf., where you transfer to Berlin Hbf. The connection between Rostock and Berlin is by the regional express, better than the ordinary RB. I don't know about the Amsterdam connection.
Assuming you haven't purchased your tickets yet: When we did a Baltic cruise, we chose an itinerary that didn't include Warnemunde - both because we'd seen a lot of Germany already and because Warnemunde isn't really very close to Berlin, so you lose a lot of your day traveling back and forth. We also chose to start in Copenhagen rather than Amsterdam. If you start outside the Baltic, you add days to your trip without really adding anything interesting along the way. Both Copenhagen and Stockholm offer Baltic cruises; we picked Copenhagen because we were able to fly directly there from Dulles. I'm really glad we did because it's a great place to spend a few days. We started in Copenhagen and visited Stockholm, Helsinki, St. Petersburg (2 nights), Tallinn, Gdansk, and Oslo (in that order).
I do agree with Brad; we started and finished in Copenhagen. Some of our travel group added days in Amsterdam either pre- or post-cruise. For Berlin, and other ports of call, check out www.alla-tour.com; we used them in St. Petersburg, and I know they offer tour services in many of the other ports of call for these cruises. Less expensive than the ship's excursions and you can form your own small group.
If you want to see Berlin don't take a cruise. Or add a few days in Berlin before or after your cruise. Warnemuende might be the closest port to Berlin anywhere on the Baltic but it doesn't mean it's close enough for a day trip. Unless you charter a private plane or helicopter you'll spend about 6 hours of the day in transit. I know a lot of cruise passengers do exactly that to spend the grand total of maybe another 6 hours in Berlin. But I strongly believe that unless you are absolutely sure that you will never again have an opportunity to come back to Europe you need to give at least a couple of days (if not a week) to get an idea why Berlin is considered one of the most fascinating cities in the world these days. That said, there are a lot of very interesting cities close to Warnemuende that are worth a visit. Check out Stralsund, Wismar, or Schwerin.
It is not worth a day trip or cruise excursion for Berlin.
Yes the station in Amsterdam is close enough to walk to.
Hi Holly, You may want to consider the town of Schwerin. It's 1 hour 15 mins by train from Warnemunde. It has a gorgeouse castle surrounded by a lake. I agree that Berlin is way too far to see in that short of time. Have fun!
