My husband and I are traveling one-way from Freiburg to Zurich on an ICE train. The current "Savings Fare" for the Bahn system says that "Individual travellers can enjoy first class for just 49 euros". Then in the conditions of the offer, it says that "Accompanying persons: Up to 4 persons from 20 euros supplement each." However, when I search for a train ride and enter that 2 people will travel it is always the same price as 2 individual train tickets -- not simply 20 euros more than the individual train ticket. And the "Savings Fare" price is the price listed for this train ride (so I assume that the trip does meet the requirements of the "Savings Fare" conditions). So, does anybody know how to get the price of one individual ticket + 20 euros? Thanks!
In the first place, savings fare tickets are only sold for routes completely in Germany. These tickets have a slightly lower price for a Mitfahrer (cotraveler). An advance purchase, discounted ticket for Freiburg to Zürich would be a Europa-Spezial Schweiz ticket. I've never seen a Mitfahrer discount for Europa-Spezial tickets. What's more, except for very short routes, the Saving Fare tickets start at €29 for the first person and €20, €9 less for a Mitfahrer. When the lowest priced tickets sell out, they go up for the first person, usually to €39. Then the Mitfahrer ticket is €30 ea, still €9 less. The Mitfahrer tickets do not remain at €20.
Thank you for all the detail in your response! :)
