We usually only do carryon luggage, but I injured my hand and so am considering checking my bag from Zurich to Cleveland. The overseas flight goes to JFK and the domestic flight departs from LGA. Am I responsible for getting my bag over to LGA?
Are you saying that your flight into JFK and out of LGA, are all part of the same ticket/airline? If so, call the airline and demand that they put you on a flight from JFK to CLE, instead of LGA. If it's two separate tickets, or you can't change your flight, then you will have to personally haul your bags from JFK, to LGA, and recheck them. It probably would have easier to do these flights via Newark, as both Newark and Cleveland are hubs for United Airlines (formerly Continental).
I wouldn't count on it - definitely check with your airline. If your travel is all under the same locator (same ticket), they MAY transfer the bags. Remember, your point of entry to the US will be JFK, so you'll have to get your bags to clear customs and drop them off again (assuming they will make the luggage transfer). Depending on how long you have between flights, the airline MAY be able to get bags between the two airports. If you have separate locators for each leg, you will be responsible for your own bags. I have done the opposite number (ORD-LGA/JFK-LHR), all on the same locator/ticket, and American made me carry bags between the airports. Again, check with your airline to be sure.
It is all on one record locator. We are using miles and so are flying rd trip for $68 pp including open jaw so we are pretty happy. We flew to Europe with only carry-on, but I want to consider the option of checking bags. Thanks for your advice.
