Back to the drawing board: Russell Square/St Pancras area to Luton Airport, redux

Ok, you folks gave me some great tips when I first posted about this 2 months ago. Isn31c and Nigel were especially helpful. I followed their advice and booked seats on EMT train from St Pancras to Luton Airport, but today got an email saying there would be no trains running that day because of a strike by the train drivers' union. I was able to get a refund of the full amount, with no fuss. But, we still need to get to the airport.

So, back to the drawing board!

I'm looking for the easiest, least complicated (and preferably economical) way to get from our hotel, which is about a block from the Russell Square tube station, to Luton Airport. Taxis are always a possibility; I see minicabride.com offering a ride for about £90 and up, depending on vehicle chosen. A transport service is similarly priced; Rome2Rio shows taxis averaging £400, which seems unlikely for a 30 mile drive.

We are comfortable taking the tube or bus, if anyone has a suggestion for those means. We will have luggage, but carry on only.

Thanks for your help, once again!

ramblin' on, it looks like that will do us pretty well. Victoria line from King's Cross to Victoria, or Piccadilly line from Russell Square to Green Park, then change to Victoria line.

The website in your link said 4 Nat'l Express buses per hour; I only see 2, but that's okay. The website also suggests buying tickets ahead of time, because of the upcoming rail strikes. I think I'll sit on this until tomorrow (if I can hold out that long!) then go ahead and book.

Thank you!

Thanks, Daniel; I'll check it out. It's always good to have a recommendation.

I've National Express several times in the last few months and they are very easy to use and great for airport transfers. You will need to walk just a short distance to Victoria Coach station.

please don't use Rome2Rio. If you insist on using them then at least don't believe anything they say

Thanks, Nigel. I did think the figure way out of line.

I think ramblin' on's idea is a winner: tube and bus.

There is also the Green line 757 bus from London Victoria, on Buckingham Palace Road- not the Coach Station.

The other two Nat Ex coaches an hour start at Paddington and call at Baker Street, St John's Wood and Golders Green- Golders Green is on the Northern line from Kings Cross St Pancras and Pad and Baker Street on the Circle and H and C from KC/St P.
You kind of just have to know that.

isn31c, the link ramblin' on posted mentioned Green Line, but when I went to its website, it wouldn't show me any buses.

I'll try it again tomorrow, but I don't want to delay too long. I think that with the train strike that day, I should go ahead and book in the next day or so.

Of those various stops on the Paddington route I would choose Golders Green- it's a major transport hub with restrooms and lots of shops and cafes close by, a vibrant part of North London. The bus station and tube station are together

Just booked National Express Coach to Luton Airport; thanks everyone!

I can't find a place to reserve seats, though; are they first come first served?

Yes, on a short and frequent journey like that first come first served. On reservable services seat reservations, only in the front 5 rows, are on the 'extras' page.
Normally £2 extra.
They won't sell more seats than physically exist on a given departure, but then first come first served.
There are lots of staff there to keep control of the lines.

I hope you noticed what we inadvertently forgot to tell you, that you avoid the £1.50 booking fee if you sign up to a free account.

Thanks again, isn31c. I hadn't noticed that signing up for the account would result in the fee being waived, but as it happened, I did, and it was! I wasn't planning to sign up, but the screen kept not letting me pay the way I wanted to (credit card,) so I signed up, and everything worked properly after that. The option for credit card was there, and I chose it, but the screen wouldn't accept my cc number or expiration date.

But all is now well. Thanks again to everyone. All this is happening next week, so I definitely started twitching when I received the email about the train strike.
