I have searched and can't seem to wrap my head around what is needed...be patient with me :)
My wife and I are staying in Bacharach for two nights in June. We would like to go to St. Goar one day and back by river. Do we need to buy tickets online ahead of time or just walk to the dock and get a ticket for the boat?

It's VERY easy to buy the tickets for the trip you mentioned. Walk across the street towards the river, and buy your tickets at the KD ticket booth in Bacharach. One point to note is that the trip between Bacharach and St. Goar takes longer in one direction than the other due to the currents (I can never remember which direction is longer). You may be riding on the elegant old Paddlewheeler Goethe in at least one direction.
St. Goar to Bacharach is longer by boat, against the current.

Round trip on the K-D boat between St Goar and Bacharach is 15,20€, only 2,60€ more than one way. One way back on the train is 3,60€.
