Greyhound. That is so cute. One person? Regular price is 54€, which includes passage on the fastest trains. Figure 4-4.5 hours and 3-4 changes of train. You can pay about 43€ and use the slower regional trains only - figure 5-5.5 hours. If your travel day is in the future, you sometimes can get cheaper tickets now online. These adv. sale tickets, good on the faster trains too, might be as low as 29€ for one person but are train-specific (must be used for the departure you book only) and there are penalties for refunds. Find schedule for your date and travel time, and prices, here: http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en The QDL ticket (regional trains) at 42€ can also be used: saves you a little but restricts you to trains after 9 am on weekdays. It's good if you have a travel companion - only 6€ more per additional person: http://www.bahn.com/i/view/USA/en/prices/germany/quer-durchs-land-ticket.shtml The Happy Weekend Ticket (regional trains again) costs 40€ and is good on Sat or Sun at any hour for 1-5 people: http://www.bahn.com/i/view/USA/en/prices/germany/happy_weekend_ticket.shtml To find regional train schedules, specify "only local transport" under "means of transport" at the scheduling page.

I certainly haven't looked at every bus line in Europe, but from the few I have investigated I would say the following: 1. There are international lines, that go from, say, Vienna to Munich (different countries). I haven't seen many long distance lines that go between cities in the same country. That doesn't mean there aren't any, I've just not seen any. 2. Bus lines in a single country, if there are any, would probably run between big cities, like Munich to Frankfurt, not between small towns, like Bacharach and Rothenburg. 3. There are regional lines, like RVO (which is run by the Bahn) in Bavaria, but their routes are pretty short (they don't try to compete with the trains). I recently went from Berchtesgaden to Rosenheim. I went from Berchtesgaden to Bad Reichenhall by train, but I could have taken the bus for about the same price. From Bad Reichenhall, I went to to Inzell, to Reit im Winkl, to Bernau, to Aschau, to Frasdorf, and finally to Rosenheim, 6 individual routes. It only cost me €12, but it took almost 9 hours. If I had just wanted to get from point to point, it would only have taken me 2 hours on the train, but I wanted to spend time in the little towns along the Alpenstrasse. I ended up with 6 hours of visit time and 3 hours on the buses. There is one possibility, the Romantic Road coach starts in Frankfurt and goes through Rothenburg. It takes four hours (8 AM to noon) and cost €45. You still have to get from Bacharach to Frankfurt Hbf.
