BA Linked tickets

I purchased two tickets through British Airways for a return trip to the US.
My return trip is from Barcelona to Rome(FCO) on Vueling Airlines . (First ticket).
My second ticket is from Rome(FCO) to Heathrow(LHR) to US.
BA says that if I link the two tickets I can check baggage through from BCN to US destination. **Is this true?
I talked to BA and they said they linked the two tickets (charged me but can't see it anywhere on the booking).
If the two tickets are linked and I miss the connecting flight out of Rome will I have to purchase another ticket back to the US or will BA put me on another flight out of FCO.

I arrive FCO from Barcelona at 11:45AM at terminal 3.

Departure time to LHR is 1:15PM from FCO at terminal 3. **Will I make it?

They said they would check your luggage through, so count on that, and basically insist upon it, if there's any question in Barcelona. I would feel comfortable with 1.5 hours for connecting flights, even allowing for some delays. Other possibilities look promising, since British has added Vueling as a code-shared partner:

Laura, thank you for your help here. This is my first European experience. I only speak/read English so
I was a little concerned about making my way through FCO to my connecting flight. I have never been to FCO or LHR for that matter.

regards

Linking is more like a cross reference. So if an agent looked at one booking they will see notes about the other. They don't become a single booking as such.

BA interlines bags between 2 separate tickets. This flight is one operated by Veuling with a BA code on it. They should interline bags with your BA flight, but be prepared potentially for confusion as they probably don't do it that often with a flight to FCO.

Two tickets even when crossed reference have no cast-iron guarantee that if the first flight is late that you are re-accomodated on a later flight for your next leg, but it is BA policy to help in these circumstances if possible. They won't though pay out an EU261 claim for the full journey only the first part if they are at fault.
