Renting from Europcar at 55r via Borgo but it's INSIDE the ZTL zone- any suggestions on how to avoid being zapped getting in & out?
(Will also be driving to Perugia, Assisi, Montepulciano and back to Florence for a day if anyone can help with these as well)
Thanks!
I guess it is Borgo Ognissanti (Borgo=old form for alley).
Observe that exiting the ZTL is not a problem - as you leave the rental agency you can only drive straight out of the ZTL. The problem could be returning the car - you need to enter ZTL and the agency has to register your entry with the municipal police.
If you prefer peace of mind, you can rent a car at via del Sansovino that is well out of ZTL, or at the airport (a bit more difficult and out of reach).
You should change over to the Sansovino rental location. They'll give you directions to the autostrada that leads out of town--not near the ZTL.
It's just about 1 1/2 or 2 miles to the Sansovino office from the Florence Train station--take a taxi.
You can actually take the tram from the railway station to Sansovino
Hi,
I would try to book from the airport or outside the ZTL zone. We had no problems getting out of Florence, coming back I got 4 in 10 minutes. Wound up hiring a taxi to bring us back to the rental office.

Thanks for all the excellent advice!
and Mary.....how awful!!
Your hotel has to register the license plate with the ZTL... But good luck! I don't know if the Italian authorities give a rats @#$. I'm wondering if and when you return the car, if you can pay cash for the rental. Can they bill your credit card later for the amount of the 150.00 euros or so for driving in the ZTL? You did close the account, right?
Miguel, closing the account does nothing to relieve you of responsibility, the collection agencies will find you. And when was the last time you were able to rent a car without a credit card, regardless of how you pay for the rental?
