We plan to rent a car starting at airport in Frankfurt and will drive through the romantic road area and then on to Salzburg. Has anyone returned their car in Freilassing (Ger) to avoid the surcharge that would be incurred if we drop the car in Austria? How much is the drop fee? Would there be a problem getting to the train station in Salzburg? We will train from there to Vienna but considered driving but would have the surcharge for certain by doing that.
We've done both...dropping in different country and paying a surcharge vs. dropping in same country to avoiding the surcharge.
The surcharge can be huge ~ 250 Euro, which is just a waste of money in my mind. Just drop the car in the same country in a place where rail is accessible. Then take the train to your final destination...Salzburg.
Drop fees are just free money for the car rental places!
We just booked one. Our drop fee was about 100E, which was huge. However, when I looked into adding train fare, lost time, etc., we determined that it was worth it to be where we wanted, when we wanted. Our rental was Salzburg to Munich -- but in between we're seeing Innsbruck, Schwangau/Fussen and Rothenburg. Doing it by train/bus would have really eaten some time -- and none of these places are too far from each other.
