Avoid Welcome Pickups

Our Welcome Pickup experiences have been mixed. It works reasonably well with a pickup from a hotel, apartment, or AirBnB… but it breaks down with pickups from airports. On an extended vacation in Scandinavia this past summer, we had several pickups schedule, but had so many problems with Welcome Pickups that we vowed never to use them again for an airport pickup. The problems we encountered are below.

No one ever met us at the arrivals area with a sign, as promised.

The drivers never respond to text messages via the Welcome Pickup app, so that feature appears to be broken.

You can never get to a live person at Welcome Pickups when there is a problem.

The specific instructions as to where we should meet the driver in the airport are never communicated to the driver.

The service is simply using a local dispatch to call a taxi driver, but the dispatch never sees what we are sent from Welcome Pickups and has no clue what services we were promised and have paid for.

Most of the drivers are angry and argumentative, especially if they have to come into the airport, which is part of the promised service for what we paid.

We had one driver that we finally connected with via phone, but he could not understand why we could not come out and find him. He was in a black taxi, and there were about 30 black taxis!

We had one driver who argued with us that we were at the wrong terminal, like it was the pilot’s fault for parking the plane in the wrong place.

There are no refunds if there is a problem and we abandon the ride and find our own taxi.

Bottom line, it is easier to grab a taxi when you get to the airport than booking in advance and paying a premium for the Welcome Pickup service. They do not deliver what they promise.

Additional Note: I am posting this on public forums as there is no place on the Welcome Pickups site to email the company or have any human communication about how frustrating it is to be their customer.

I’m very sorry you had this disappointing experience. My experience being picked up from an airport ( Istanbul) was quite different. I received a what’s app message from my driver as soon as I landed in Istanbul and we were able to communicate well as I went through baggage claim and passport control. He told me specifically where to meet him and the ride was smooth and professional.

Wow, I am so sorry to hear of your issue with Welcome Pickups. Not a good way to disrupt a vacation :-( I have used them for airport pickups in Paris, Bucharest, Palermo and Lisbon and have never run into an issue. When I'm arriving in the evening by myself I prefer to know someone is waiting for me. In fact the drivers have been there when I was over an hour late landing. In each case I received a text and Whats App communication the day before with my driver's name, picture, license plate number and a number to contact him when I was finished with passport control. In all but 1 case the driver was there with a sign with my name (in the 4th case I was already outside when he drove up) and I was given a running commentary about the city on our way to my hotel by the friendly drivers. I do agree that sometimes it is easier and cheaper to grab a cab at the airport.

I used them in Istanbul just a month ago and have no complaints. They picked me up at the airport. Service was great, driver was great, and the same thing on the return to the airport.

I have used Welcome Pickups many times in Paris and had no issues, but generally I take an official taxi from CDG to my hotel to avoid any problems with late arrival, but I prefer to use the service from my hotel to the airport.

I had a good experience with Welcome Pick ups in Istanbul. Communication was thru Whats App. Our communication was with the driver.

Sure there is. Just go to https://www.welcomepickups.com/about and scroll down to the bottom. It has contact information for their corporate office in the UK. If you don't want to call the UK, you can try their toll free number at (877) 255-8178 or email them at [email protected]

We also will avoid Welcome Pickups because of our experience.

Pick-up place: Paris Airport
Time: After flight from New York
Problem - we texted the driver from NY telling them our flight was an hour delayed. He texted back, no problem. We arrived, no driver. We get a text from the company stating that because we arrived late there was no driver available. We had to grab a taxi.
Refund: nope, credit only

After that experience we never hire a pickup, we just get in the official taxi line or call Uber, if available.

Hmm, I have used Welcome Pickups about half a dozen times with no issues but not in Paris or Scandinavia. Zi have always been able to communicate with driver via WhatsApp. Sometimes there are issues at a particular airport that causes them to be a few min late but usually they are there. One time we had to wait 10 minutes because we were a bit early.

I expect to be using again in Malta in a few weeks. If I have any issues I will report.

I read so many similar complaints, that we decided to just get a taxi van (5 people) at Paris airport. As we were leaving the baggage claim area, an official person asked if we were wanting a taxi and walked us right by the scammers and took us into the official line. I already knew about the scammers, and when they saw her with us, they looked disappointed.

The taxi did end up charging us 10 EU more than he should but I was fine with that, as it was seamless.

I used them to take me from my hotel to the Piraeus cruise port, the only non crooked cab I took in Athens and Istanbul

What amount do you think he should have charged?

The fixed, flat rates are for up to 4 passengers. They are allowed to charge 5.50 E for each additional passenger. Also, you did not indicate which "bank" you traveled to...right bank is 56 E, left bank is 65 E, and could that explain your "over charge"? Where was your hotel located?
