Any advantage to book well ahead of time?, or should I wait to get to Madrid? Would like to go first class with wife and another couple. Thanks! George

I did the same trip -- would actually recommend a stopover in Cordoba to see the Mezquita before continuing on to Seville -- they even have left luggage lockers in Cordoa
Anyway regarding your question, I purchased the tickets in Atocha Madrid 2 days before we traveled and there was no problem at all. I suppose it depends on the time of the year -- we traveled in December, not the busiest season admittedly.
