Authorized Users for Tap and Go

Good Afternoon!

My family of four will be traveling in France, Italy, and Switzerland and will use RER, metro, vaporettos, etc... in the cities we will visit. I have read that each person needs their own credit card to tap in and off public transportation. My question is do authorized users fit this definition since each will have their own card? the reason I ask is that all are linked to the same account and I didn't know if it were different accounts that were needed for the tap and go?

I have so appreciated the knowledgeable folks who freely give their experienced advice on this forum.

My husband is an authorized user on my CC account, and he has his own card with a number that is different than the number on my card. He is able to tap and pay with no issues at all.

Normally yes that's fine - authorised users normally have separate card numbers anyway. If they are the same, you can load them to Google Pay or Apple Pay, and when tapped a new unique number is generated.

Every country/city does things differently. There is no "Tap and Go" in Switzerland. There is no Tap and Go on the RER and Metro in Paris, only on the busses.

So first pay attention to how the system works in each place you visit. In some places you can tap multiple times for with the same card, once for each person. In other places each person needs their own card. Important is that each card has their own "identity" in this case. They can be linked to the same account though.

My husband and I are on one account, but each have different numbers. Those cards are on Apple Pay and we used our phones to tap in and out all over Italy with no problems.

Is anybody going to use a smartphone with the card in the wallet app, double-clicking the phone to activate a tap-to-pay process? Even if the card number is the same for multiple users, each user’s individual phone makes it a unique transaction. If users have cards with the same number (my husband and I are authorized users on all of each other’s credit card accounts, and always the same numbers on our shared cards), then tapping separate cards won’t work, even though tapping separate phones with those same cards will.

Many people (including me) tap their phones for public transport literally every day. For me it's usually multiple trips a day. You don't need to double-click anything- you can tap your locked phone to pay ('transit mode' allows public transport transactions even when the phone is locked).

I agree with Simon. Just go into Settings, scroll down to Wallet and Apple Pay, then scroll down to Transit Cards, and click the credit card that you want to use for express transit. It will work automatically without requiring authentication, and as Simon said, come on, when the phone is locked. In fact, it sometimes will work even when the battery is dead.

Both my wife and I have the same card and cc number on Apple Wallet. Just go to settings and click on Express Transit card. Works like a charm.
