We are traveling from Vienna to Melk, Melk to Salsburg and return to Vienna, what would be the least expensive way to travel? Would the Railpass be the best solution?
First, are those three separate days of travel? The minimum Austrian Rail 2nd class saver pass is 3 days for $119 pP if purchased by March 30, $140 after that. Vienna to Melk is €15,70 2nd class ($22) and takes about the same amount of time by express or regional trains. Melk to Salzburg is €35,40 ($50). Salzburg to Vienna, €47,50 ($67). That's $139, pretty much a wash. If you get your pass by the 30th, it would pay. You can save $2 pP on the Vienna to Melk day with an Einfach Raus ticket (all day pass for regional trains).
