Newbie question, but I am finding conflicting information. How far out can I book a ticket on either Austrian Rail or Trenitalia? I'm currently looking at February 2013 and neither website supports buying tickets yet. I don't know when I should expect to start looking for discount fares. Thanks!

Heather, you asked a similar question on this travel journey on 8/5. Tim provided an excellent answer. You are freaking out way too early with regards to purchasing tickets. You will be able to purchase about 90-120 days out. Since this is possibly a round trip from Vienna, I would take Tim's suggestion and book the tickets on the direct night train from the Austrian rail website. You won't even need to deal with Trenitalia.
