I have been able to navigate and purchase rail tickets from Germany and Italy sites, but I'm unable to figure out Austria's. Im trying to get a one way ticket from Salzburg to Venice on the 0704 train that should arrive in S. Lucia Station @ 1330. My problem: When I get as far as choosing a "station" for the "Destination," Venezia or Santa Lucia is not a choice. Please help!
You're using http://www.oebb.at/en/ ?
That's strange - I had no problem. I entered Venezia, and gave me several options, among which were Venezia Mestre and Venezia S. Lucia, with a ticket price of €29.
Try this link and select Venezia S. Lucia (hopefully it works)
Thank you for your help. I did get as far as the site you directed me to. . however, when you click on "ticket by post," the site takes you to one all in German. Furthermore, I can't find a icon to click on to change the language??
It's very possible that there isn't an English version and you must do it in German. I think you can order E-tickets by clicking on "Tickets per E-mail". I'm not positive though. You could try using Babelfish to help translate.
I would recommend sending Lee from Denver a message -he's very knowledgeable about German rail, familiar with the language, and might be able to help out on this website.
I see three runs on the www.oebb.at site and all three terminate at Venezia Santa Lucia after first stopping at Venezia Mestre. If choosing a destination is still a problem, let the system decide and see what they give you. Venezia Mestre is a 12-minute ride away from Venezia Santa Lucia so it's not really a problem.
I made a similar booking a few weeks ago. There is a point in the booking where the site goes German. I had a German-speaking friend on the phone as I made the booking and he made a fake booking to follow along. When it asks a "Ja"/"Nein" question, it is asking whether you want a flexible or fixed ticket. The latter is cheaper.
I just remembered what happened on the site! Sometimes when you do the booking, the departing station changes to the first station (begins with an "A" and you can't get a train to Venice from that station. Double check that the departing station is still Salzburg when you try and select the destination and it should work.
Good luck!
If handling the German is a problem, you can always book by phoning the Austrian rail Call Center. Dial 011 (US international access code) + 43 (country code for Austria) + (0)5-1717. Omit the initial zero which is only used for calls originating in Austria.
