Hi, The rides Vienna-Salzburg and Salzburg-Budapest do not require reservations. I've done those rides by getting a point to point ticket the day before w/o the reservation. If you do want a reservation, get it in Vienna if that's your first place in Austria.

Nannette, I am courious. That train from Salzburg to Budapest; how many changes and how many hours? If my gut is correct (and it isnt very often) you might do better Zurich to Salzburg and then Salzburg to Vienna and Vienna to Budapest. More often than not most train tickets can be purchased with no issues a few days in advance when you get in country, but it sounds like you already purchased? But havent reserved?

James there are direct trains Budapest Keleti to Salzburg and Salzburg to Budapest taking just under 6 hours. we took the train to Salzburg a year and a half ago and the nice lady at the Mav-Start office on Jozsef Atilla told us she was selling us a return ticket because it was cheaper than a one way ticket! We are looking forward to being back in Budapest for a few days in Sept.
