How much time should I schedule for this site?

We spent about three hours at Auschwitz and about two at Birkeneau and felt like that was enough. There's no question a person could spend more, but the feel of the place doesn't take long to hit you.

We used public transportation from Krakow to Auschwitz, Auschwitz to Birkenau, and back to Krakow. From leaving Krakow to returning we spent most of a day.
