Atocha Platform Levels - Alta & Baja / Allow time for baggage X-rays in Spain

In making plans to go through Madrid from Bilbao to Toledo on a Friday afternoon we went headlong into afternoon commuter crowds and confusion.

First, the RS2017 guide does mention (in parentheses) that some trains leave from the lower level. This included our (all?) train(s) to Toledo. If only I had read that detail.

Second most all Trains in Spain seem to require baggage X-ray prior to boarding. Switching from the Cercanias from Charmartín we went to the long Alta (upstairs) line for X-rays - only to be told to go to the Baja level (which wasn’t all that well labeled.

Going to the Baja level led to a huge knot of around a hundred people all waiting to go through x-ray checks. With over an hour until departure we went for a meal (a story unto itself). Upon return the line was (mostly) gone and we were able to enter the departure area (which does have a café).

I did not see anything about x-rays in the RS2017 Spain guide. We didn’t have that happen boarding in Bilbao but did returning from Toledo. I read online before leaving for Europe that this is now required for high speed trains (though we haven’t yet taken enough of the so far for me to confirm it).

What I can confirm is that they only check your carry on. Not your person. So it’s possible to carry a pocket knife or scissors on the train with you as long as you have on you.

Bottom line: Make sure to allow time to get through baggage X-rays when planning your departures. If going through major stations (like Atocha) at “prime” times prepare for possible long lines.

The Atocha station was confusing. Luckily the lines were really short when we went through it three times last September. We were also on the wrong level for one leg of the trip - learned to ask and not assume we knew where to go. The staff were helpful when we asked for directions.

Our baggage went through airport type security screening right on the train platform in Sevilla before taking AVE to Madrid.

Cordoba also has screening. Madrid was the only place I had to remove my coat and it was also screened. Cordoba was a wand passover, so that pocket knife or corkscrew might not have made it.
In Atocha, the board tells which floor to use. Some trains are listed well in advance, but I was never there during 'rush hour' so not sure there would always be time.
My practice was to arrive at least 40-60 minutes ahead of train or bus departure depending on size of station or my level of unfamiliarity.

The screening process was not used on the many non-AVE trains I took in Spain last summer.

I agree that Atocha is somewhat confusing. And buying tickets from the staffed ticket office can take way too long.

Just took the bus/train from Granada to Ronda.

No X-ray before getting on the bus in Granada. Went through X-ray at Antequera though I wasn’t on an AVE (Antequera is Media Distancia / “milk run”). The entire Santa Ana terminal there is treated like an AVE waiting area. I didn’t sense anyone but passengers were going through it.

Another thing to factor into trips to the station: blocked roads. The taxi driver had to take the long way to the Granada station from Plaza Nueva due to some sort of street closure on Calle Gran Via de Colón. Sounded like a protest of some sort.

An often missed section of the Atocha train station is the monument to the terrorist bombing that killed 191 people. It is truly worth a look..... Ask any guard - it's sort of hidden.....

Yesterday traveled from Ronda (no x-ray) through Córdoba (wand and x-ray) to Sevilla (where there were x-ray machines but not on exit). I’m now pretty sure this is as I had read: mainly high speed trains only (AVE and others).

Later this week we take AVE to Barcelona which likely will include x-rays.

The wand check was friendly in Córdova. I still have my pocket knife. I don’t know if it’s because he wanted to scan my jacket while I wore it (after putting everything in it to put through the scanner) and wanted just to move on or that he noticed it in my hand while I started emptying my pockets.
