I am starting my 2007 Europe trip in Greece with a school tour group. I was planning on leaving the group in Athens and flying to Munich and spending a few days there on my own. Here is the problem. I learned that the schools connecting flight back to the states is landing in Munich. Would I cause them any problems by landing in Munich and not flying the rest of the way with them. I would hate for an airline to wait on me or something like that when I left. The tour company said if I dont fly the whole way back they will not send me my tickets to Greece. So I am not telling them either.
Daniel, did you try to request a ticket for your return trip from another city? Say your tour flies in and out of Athens, but you'd like to fly into Athens but back from London. When I took my group I requested a ticket to London (earlier than the students' arrival in Amsterdam) and then returned from the end of our trip with them. I think they charged me $50 and then you only have to worry about the transportation Athens to London. It wouldn't hurt to ask if there is anyway to make arrangements for an extended stay and different return. They buy all of their tickets through a wholesaler and probably have tickets for the London - TN available to them for less than the Greece-TN trip. Worth a try.
