Hi, I'm looking for a good entry point for Europe or Africa and
recall a Steves show (dimly) that had him strolling
the streets of Athens outside travel agencies with
much cheaper fares for sale. Truth to this idea?
Other places in Europe, or S. Europe, Meditteranean that
this might be had too? I'm esp looking for a cheaper way to
get to Tanzania. Thanks!!

Having researched how to get to Tanzania (went in fall '07) I don't think there is an easy or cheap way to get there! I know when we got airfare from home, we paid around $1800. Are you in Princeton, IN or NJ? I would guess that you could get cheaper air from the NYC area. Are you flying into Arusha or Dar? Dar would allow you more options, but if you're doing a safari, the typical circuit (northern circuit) starts in Arusha.
Please feel free to PM me for any other questions. If it helps, it took me almost 2 years to plan our trip to Africa. I can plan Paris in a week but this was rather extensive.
I wouldn't consider the trip to TZ without trip insurance, though. Also I would strongly encourage evacuation insurance if the need arises.
