Flying into Istanbul in the late afternoon next week and need to get to Sultanahmet to check in. We had planned to take the rail system. Any thoughts pro or con?
We were in Istanbul in May and June and took the train from the airport but then switched to the tram which hits more of the tourist areas. Look at the maps of the train and I believe you will want to get off at the 6th stop (from the airport) - you can also catch the tram later on but by then it will be totally full and you won't get a place to sit.
Hence, be ready for the change in transport modes. Also, this mainly works if you are traveling fairly light and can handle your luggage.
Thanks. I will take your advice. How did you like Istanbul? Any other tips.
We loved Istanbul. Great city - easy to get around if you can read the maps that show where the trams/trains travel.
As usual, watch out for the scams. I actually saw one in action where the shoe shine boys purposely drop their brushes in front of you. You being nice, pick it up and give it to them. Then then try and give you what you think is a free shine but they then demand $20 or so. Luckily, I had read about it and managed to warn some other tourist.
Also, look at your restaurant bills carefully. Some folks will try and add a tax to it when it should already be included in the prices.
But don't let these things stop you. It is a wonderful place to experience another culture.
